Sometimes, the strongest advocates are those who quietly understand what it means to start over.
Every item hanging on a clothing rack has a story. Some have celebrated milestones. Others have traveled through decades of changing fashions. And occasionally, they become part of someone else's new beginning.
For Wendy, manager of Trend Fashions Calgary, that idea is deeply personal.
Today, she helps customers discover unique secondhand treasures while championing causes that create safe futures for women and families. But not long ago, she was navigating a major life transition of her own. "I had my life turn completely upside down in recent years," Wendy shares.
After leaving a long-term emotionally abusive relationship, Wendy slowly rebuilt her life. A year spent away from the city gave her space to heal before she returned to Calgary, where an unexpected opportunity appeared in the window of Trend Fashions in Kensington.
"I stumbled across Trend and the 'Now Hiring' sign in the window," muses Wendy. "It has been incredibly rewarding to work for an owner that has similar values regarding giving back to the community, a love for animals, and the environmental benefits of shopping secondhand."
Finding Purpose Through New Beginnings
Abuse does not always leave visible bruises. Emotional and psychological abuse can be difficult to recognize—even for the person experiencing it. That reality is one Wendy wishes more people understood. "I'm all too aware of how hard it is to leave, even to realize that what you're experiencing is abuse when it isn't physical in nature."
Rather than allowing that chapter of her life to define her, Wendy has transformed her experience into empathy and action. Through her role at Trend Fashions Calgary, she has found meaningful opportunities to support organizations like Heart Home Network, which help women and families find safety, stability, and a path forward. "Without the support of a community and organizations like Heart Home Network, many of the women and families in abusive situations never leave."
Wendy's compassion extends beyond people to animals as well. A passionate advocate for animal rescue organizations, Wendy shares her home with two rescue cats that she considers family.
For Wendy, giving back is about possibility. Possibilities that help create the same opportunities that someone else once helped make possible for her.
The Ripple Effect of Kindness
Communities become sustainable when people invest in one another.
Wendy doesn't describe herself as someone changing the world. Instead, she believes in something more powerful: ripple effects.
"I don't expect us to make monumental changes. Everything starts small, and sometimes the impact is not immediately apparent," says Wendy. "If my support means that one more family can leave a dangerous situation, that would be enough."
For organizations like Heart Home Network, those ripples matter.
Every donation, partnership, volunteer hour, or community supporter helps create homes where women and children can heal after experiencing domestic violence. A safe apartment becomes the beginning of a child's stability. Employment services become financial independence. Trauma-informed counselling becomes renewed confidence. One opportunity creates another.
