Social Work Month: Supporting Our Residents, Clients, and Communities

March is Social Work Month, a time to recognize the vital role social workers play in supporting individuals, families, and communities. Often working behind the scenes, social workers help people navigate uncertainty—connecting them to resources, advocating for their needs, and walking alongside them as they rebuild stability.

At The Brenda Strafford Foundation (BSF), social workers are central to our work across both community supports and senior care. Through Heart Home Network and BSF Lifestyles, they help individuals access services, navigate complex systems, and move toward safer, healthier futures.

Helping Survivors Rebuild Through Heart Home Network

One of the most impactful ways BSF supports the community is through Heart Home Network, which provides safe housing and trauma-informed supports for women and children who have experienced domestic violence.

Social workers help survivors navigate complex systems, develop safety plans, and connect with resources such as housing, legal supports, and mental health services. This work often unfolds over time, with social workers walking alongside families as they regain stability and begin moving forward.

For Krista, the work is both meaningful and deeply personal:

Working as a social worker at Heart Home Network is a profound privilege. There’s a real weight and impact in being part of someone else’s story, especially during moments they never wanted to experience. My role is to show up, listen, hold space, and remind people they don’t have to move through it alone. Being able to witness that resilience, and support people through those moments, is honestly one of the biggest honours of this role.”

Supporting Seniors with Compassion Through BSF Lifestyles

Social workers also play an important role within BSF Lifestyles, our aging care and senior living communities. They work closely with residents, families, and interdisciplinary care teams to help navigate transitions, access supports, and maintain meaningful connections.

Social workers are an integral part of our residents’ care team, committed to The BSF Way, our person-centred approach to care, services, encouraging a sense of belonging to optimize well-being and enrich people’s lives.

For Annie, social work is rooted in advocacy and compassion:

Social work means to be the voice for others, advocating for their needs, and showing compassion during people's most vulnerable moments. Social work is not just a job, but a commitment to lend a helping hand.”

Working closely with older adults is one of the most rewarding parts of her role.

I love seeing our residents and their family members and helping them in any way they need. I get a lot of challenging questions, but those moments give me the opportunity to learn and grow from each experience. They share so much wisdom and have so many great stories to tell.”

Ryan shares a similar perspective on supporting older adults:

What I love most about my job is the fact that I find great meaning in serving our seniors. Social work for me means encouraging everyone I work with to be as healthy physically, mentally, relationally, and spiritually as possible.”

Why Social Workers Matter

The insights and expertise of social workers are vital to the communities we serve. As Kevin Melanson, Vice President, International Health & Social Impact, explains:

BSF's social workers are closest to the realities, strengths, and challenges faced by the clients and communities we serve. We are thankful for and proud of each social worker we are fortunate to have as part of the BSF team.”

During Social Work Month, we recognize the dedicated professionals who bring compassion, expertise, and advocacy to their work every day. Their contributions create safer environments, stronger support systems, and opportunities for people to heal and thrive.

This recognition also invites us to reflect on how the profession continues to evolve in response to changing community needs. It reminds us that building safer, more connected communities is a shared responsibility—one that extends beyond the profession itself.

Supporting the Work That Makes Healing Possible

During Social Work Month, we extend our deepest appreciation to the social workers whose compassion and dedication make this work possible every day.
