Violence Prevention

Building safer, more connected communities

Preventing family violence requires more than responding when violence occurs.

The Brenda Strafford Foundation works alongside community organizations, researchers and other partners to connect practice, research and community expertise to help advance prevention and create safer futures for individuals and families.

Future Directions for Domestic Violence Prevention Programs in Calgary

BSF continues to assess emerging trends, evidence, community needs and partnership opportunities to inform our long-term approach to advancing family violence prevention in Calgary.

Brenda's House Prevention Partnership Initiative

Brenda's House has a long history of supporting Calgary families. Opened in 2008 by the Children's Cottage Society with support from The Brenda Strafford Foundation, the home provided emergency shelter for families experiencing homelessness. In 2025, operations transitioned to Inn from the Cold.

Building on this legacy, BSF is exploring a new chapter for Brenda's House as a community hub focused on prevention through early intervention, education, collaboration and evidence-informed programming.

Building Safer, More Connected Communities

BSF is working to develop and support accessible, evidence-informed tools, education, partnerships and approaches that strengthen prevention and improve access to support for individuals and families affected by family violence.

Advancing Research on Domestic Violence Across the Lifespan

We are advancing research and knowledge about domestic violence across the lifespan to better understand how experiences, risks, impacts and support needs evolve over time.
